The EIV Haestrum is an FTL-capable Pandoran-Class capital ship of the Escean Interstellar Navy named after Captain John J. Haestrum who, during the Resource War of 2076 over Tarrus-3, sacrified himself and what remained of his stricken ship by ramming it into the Maktharian mercenary flagship Dra'Zul with weapons hot, ensuing the survival of evacuating Seqari colonists.
Among the various galactic fleets the Pandoran's are unequivocally the most powerful vessels in service, able to take as well as dish out tremendous punishment. Coated in Grade 5 titanium alloy and ballistic cermaics, with depleted uranium sheets in the most vital areas, these ships were designed around the principal of ancient battleships, making them among the best protected in existence. The durability of a Pandoran is considered such that mimicking the last act of Captain Haestrum is a viable combat tactic, thanks to a thick reinforced bow designed to crush from a high velocity impact.
Pandoran's are equipped with a huge array of offensive weaponary: including two bow-mounted forward-facing 80cm rail guns for ship-to-ship warfare and two belly-mounted orbital strike cannons comprise the primary weapons; seven dual-gun 150mm railgun turrets mounted dorsally, on the belly and on the port and starboard flanks form secondary armament; and fourteen dual-gun 80mm ERAT variant turrets located on the wing bridges, port and starboard flanks and belly, along with thirty 10-round guided missiles complete the tertiary compliment. Defensive weapons include anti-satellite missiles and point-defence laser cannons, along with a cyberwarfare and electronic countermeasures suite.
These ships use two large-scale V-Non reactors to supply power to their massive D-Drive cores and primary propulsion, which consists of twelve massive ion thrusters (the nacelles of the upper engines are larger than some terrestrial frigates), while a small deuterium/helium-3 fusion plant provides secondary power for lighting, heating, computing and weapons. Main reactor refuelling is not necessary for at least thirty years.
Fully stocked the ship can carry up to 5,000 marines, 20 Blazer and 10 Bull dropcraft, 10 light strike fighters, and 30 Mastiff APCs or 15 Chasseur MBTs, along with 6,000 tonnes of additional cargo. Overall length is 623m and maximum loaded weight caps out at 336,000 tonnes.
Given their size, these ships are constructed in the orbital EIN Fleet Yards above the moon and spend their entire service period in space, unable to enter the atmosphere of any planet as a result of their massive weight, which when exposed to gravity, vastly overpowers the propulsion system. A result of private and state defence cooperation, each Pandoran costs an estimated 216 billion Escean Dura.
