this, i like it. revolvers have always held a special place in my heart. despite that a smaller and lighter firearm with a much larger ammo capacity and higher rate of fire would be more efficient to accompany a sword, large caliber revolvers always send a special kind of message when wielded beside a sword, especially if the sword is larger such as a small claymore or a bastard sword.
you know, with the weapon and world information you've given, i could write fan fiction on this already. typically i don't write fan fiction, but this is intense. i almost need to stop following your work before you start to have an overwhelming influence on me OE and get sued for copyright infringement. don't worry. there will be more than enough differences.
I keep considering an idea along the lines of experiment gone wrong, or some kind of previously unecnountered horror (one revolved around diamond-like creatures). Not for this story, but a follow up. Just can't settle on what exactly I want it to be, whether physical like Dead Space or a psychological Event Horizon style, or where it's encountered, which proves difficult since derelict spacecraft with nobody home or abandoned colony have been done a lot. I would love to do something like Alien or Aliens and have a creature as threatening as them, but for obvious reasons...
At the moment my Makthar sort of fill the position, but not truly. Sort of a Predator/Krogan mash up but they don't behave like the movie monster (they talk for one thing, with a voice modelled somewhat on Bane, at least for my character Pinkeye), and can be reasonable. There's even a group of them on the protagonist's side who have their own specially made heavy weapons. Pinkeye himself is sort of an affable implacable psychopath with Terminator-like resilience. He eats up two Grizzly mags for instance, but he's exception to the rule as he's bigger and stronger than a lot of other Makthar. He does like to liquefy people's insides, though.
